Most hammocks are made of cotton. But if you prefer your hammock to be weatherproof, for example, or if you know that you will be using it primarily for travelling, you will be pleased to hear that there are special materials like parachute silk for exactly those purposes.

Most hammocks are made of cotton as its qualities basically make it perfect for that purpose. Cotton is tearproof, absorbs moisture easily and is very soft to the touch.

Scrunch it, pull it, wash it – without any wear and wrinkles. That’s what polyester became famous for. Polyester was the fabric of choice in a changing economy of speed, efficiency and convenience. If the food industry produced fries and coke, the textile industry supplemented it with Polyester – quick, cheap and easy.

Sunbrella, a fabric made of acrylic fibers with pigmentation added prior to extrusion, offered the rich look and feel of cotton, but did not fade or degrade. Even in the brightest sun, Sunbrella offered years of carefree service with a warranty that was unheard of in the marketplace. A product so drastically different from anything else available, Sunbrella grew to be trusted as the awning fabric that was guaranteed against the elements.
